The Lapoi inspired dress ( without the accessories)

Look 4 is my reinterpretation of the Lapoi, traditional attire of the Dusun Bundu from Ranau, also worn by Dusun Tinagas and Dusun Kimaragang. In the past, Lapoi was handwoven from natural fibers of banana and pineapple plants, carrying function and identity of these communities.

I wanted to preserve the essence of the Lapoi, especially the distinctive sleeve gap and neckline, while reimagining it in a simpler, couture form. The clean black fabric lets the silhouette highlight the design, with gold trimming that pays homage to the traditional detailing.

To me, this dress is a bridge between past and present, a way to honor the craftsmanship and cultural roots of the Lapoi, while giving it a fresh voice in contemporary couture.
